Iowa

Bibliography

There are two main works of Iowa philatelic literature:

Iowa Post Offices 1833-1985 by Patera and Gallagher should be considered first.

Postmarked Iowa A List of Discontinued and Renamed Post Offices by Guy Ramsey is older, but does provide some historical data to compliment dates.

You can access my online guide of Iowa Post Offices here.

Market

Iowa is a perennial bottom ten state. While there seems to be a fair number of collectors, this number does not translate into sales. There is plenty of material to collect, an accessible territorial period and a large potential base of collectors. There is a very marked preference for 19th Century covers. Hopefully, more people will find their way into Iowa covers.

2001 Update: Among the 50 states, the District of Columbia, R.P.O.'s and Streetcars, Iowa rates as the 39th state in terms of percentage of cover sold at 47.56%. It ranks 25th in terms of the value of covers sold as percentage of all town cancels sold at 1.43%. The overall rank is 38th. This is a ten year running average. The most recent trends are declining.
