Market

The Louisiana postal history market is typical of most southern states. There are fewer collectors than the most eastern, western or mid-western states, but the collectors tend to be quite serious. There is a strong preference for confederate and pre confederate material, but most covers eventually find a home. There is usually little material available to collect. New Orleans covers can provide a lifetime of study. New collectors for state postal history are mostly entering the hobby via the internet. The trend favors the largest states. Louisiana is not getting very many of these new collectors.

Among the 50 states, the District of Columbia, R.P.O.'s and Streetcars, Louisiana rates as the 7th state in terms of percentage of cover sold at 71.45%. It ranks 31st in terms of the value of covers sold as percentage of all town cancels sold at 1.16%. The overall rank is 12th. This is a ten year running average. The most recent trends are declining.
