Rhode Island is a small state. That gives collectors the illusion of possible completeness. That once made the market for its covers among the best. A very high percentage of Rhode Island covers offered sold. Common material found a buyer or two and scarce material found still competition. There was slightly less interest in the big cities, but even these were collected. Lately, there have been changes in the way collectors find their entry into collecting postal history. Up until recently new collectors came from the stamp publications and stamp shows. Lately more collectors have come from the internet. Their interest focuses on their home state. That state is or likely to be big. The demand for Rhode Island has slowed, but remains above average.Among the 50 states, the District of Columbia, R.P.O.'s and Streetcars, Oregon rates as the 2nd state in terms of percentage of covers sold at 82.64%. It ranks 37th in terms of the value of covers sold as percentage of all town cancels sold at 0.85%. The overall rank is 13th. This is a ten year running average. The most recent trends are about the same.
