MarketFor many years the interest in South Dakota was less than the interest in North Dakota. This has changed, but the significance may be no greater than discussing how many angels can dance on the head of a pin. There are only a few South Dakota collectors. They seem to collect statewide. There is obviously some concentration on the territorial period. Many new state postal history collectors are coming from non traditional sources, often being introduced to the hobby from the internet. This trend has favored the larger sates. Sparsely populated South Dakota is hurt. Among the 50 states, the District of Columbia, R.P.O.'s and Streetcars, South Dakota rates as the 53rd state in terms of percentage of covers sold at 24.26%. It ranks 38th in terms of the value of covers sold as percentage of all town cancels sold at 0.75%. The overall rank is 51st. This is a ten year running average. The most recent trends are decreasing sharply. |
