Virginia

Bibliography

Virginia philatelic literature is fairly scarce:

The Postal History of Maryland, The Delmarva Peninsula and the District of Columbia by Chet Smith and John Kay contain post office data on Accokeek and Northampton county.

The Postal Markings of Virginia by The Virginia Postal History Society was published serially showing all know antebellum Virginia markings.

The Post Offices and Early Postmaster of Virginia by Richard Small is a good start at a complete post office listing. Rockingham county is mostly missing and there are a number of question marks, but it better than what precedes it.

You can access my online guide of Virginia Post Offices here.

Market

Virginia presents a market in transition. Five years ago, it was only possible to sell covers dated from 1861 or earlier.  They sold quite well, but later material languished. Now, the demand for antebellum covers is slower, but more collectors have picked up collecting particular areas of the state, collecting material right up to the modern era. There some emphasis on county collecting, especially the coastal counties. Overall However, Virginia is a large state and there are many opportunities for collectors.

Among the 50 states, the District of Columbia, R.P.O.'s and Streetcars, Virginia rates as the 33rd state in terms of percentage of covers sold at 50.08%. It ranks 14th in terms of the value of covers sold as percentage of all town cancels sold at 1.90%. The overall rank is 22nd. This is a ten year running average. The most recent trends are about the same.
