Market
The
market for New York covers is completely
dominated by individual county collectors. The
market for some counties is quite strong. The
market for other counties is non existent. In
general, western New York and the counties
around New York City are in the most demand. New
York city is collected, but New York county is
the weakest part of the city. Except those who
collect doanes and Long Island, most collectors
will not tolerate 20th century covers. There is
plenty of opportunity for any potential New York
collector, regardless of which county they
choose to collect.
Among the
50 states, the District of Columbia, R.P.O.'s
and Streetcars, New York rates as the 46th state
in terms of percentage of covers sold at 45.75%.
It ranks 2nd in terms of the value of covers
sold as percentage of all town cancels sold at
7.62%. The overall rank is 23rd. This is a ten
year running average. The most recent trends are
increasing. I thought it might be interesting to
quantify the level of interest for all the
counties in New York. I figured the percentage
of covers I have sold as compared to the total
of the covers sold and the covers available.
Since some of the New York covers I sell are not
sold to New York collectors, I decided to
eliminate flags and doanes from the total of
covers sold. While not perfect, this should
provide more accurate results. This is what I
found:
