Market

Kentucky is a difficult state to collect. There is a small but steady demand for. There are a tremendous number of post office. Material is tough to find. Most covers are philatelic examples. It wouldn't surprise me if more than half of the 19th century post offices remain undiscovered. With all these limitations, the Kentucky market has suffered. There a few strange manifestations. In most states, manuscript cancels are in as much demand as handstamped cancels. Because manuscripts dominate Kentucky covers, handstamps are at a substantial premium, especially in the stampless period. With all the challenges, Kentucky can be a very good state to collect.

Among the 50 states, the District of Columbia, R.P.O.'s and Streetcars, Kentucky rates as the 50th state in terms of percentage of cover sold at 40.78%. It ranks 32nd in terms of the value of covers sold as percentage of all town cancels sold at 1.01%. The overall rank is 47th. This is a ten year running average. The most recent trends are about the same.
