Market

For such a small state, New Jersey present surprisingly complex market factors. Most states the size of New Jersey have collectors chasing the entire state. However, New Jersey is collected by county. The most popular counties are Cape May and Sussex. In general, the northern counties and southern counties do best. Less interest is shown in the central part of the state. As with almost every eastern and mid western states, collectors prefer 19th century covers. I thought it might be interesting to quantify the level of interest for all the counties in New Jersey. I figured the percentage of covers I have sold as compared to the total of the covers sold and the covers available. Since some of the New Jersey covers I sell are not sold to New Jersey collectors, I decided to eliminate flags and doanes from the total of covers sold. While not perfect, this should provide more accurate results. Among the 50 states, the District of Columbia, R.P.O.'s and Streetcars, New Jersey rates as the 51st state in terms of percentage of covers sold at 40.77%. It ranks 24th in terms of the value of covers sold as percentage of all town cancels sold at 1.43. The overall rank is 43rd. This is a ten year running average. The most recent trends are about the same. These are the rankings by county:
