Market

The market for North Dakota is in the midst of a fairly serious downward spiral. There are only a few collectors, and most of these are sufficiently advanced so that they buy very little. Few new collectors have entered the hobby. This makes for solid opportunities for a potential collector. With the lone exception of a limited number of better items, North Dakota covers are a hard sell. Town Cancel collectors once came mostly from the world of traditional philately. The strong interest in completion drove town cancel to smaller states, where completion was a tantalizing possibility. Nowadays, most town cancel collectors came from outside of philately and discover the hobby from the internet. They focus on the local aspect of town cancel collecting and have driven a new demand for big states. North Dakota is now the absolute worst of the fifty states. I only mailed four lists. I expect further decline.

Among the 50 states, the District of Columbia, R.P.O.'s and Streetcars, North Dakota rates as the 42nd state in terms of percentage of covers sold at 47.11%. It ranks 49th in terms of the value of covers sold as percentage of all town cancels sold at 0.52%. The overall rank is 50th. This is a ten year running average. The most recent trends are declining sharply.
